A new dog needs lots of love and attention. You will need to spend extra time with your new pet to help it acclimatise to its new home. Choose a period when you are not too busy, and will have time for your dog - not a holiday period when your home is full of visitors, or you are going out a lot. Caring for a pet can be a rewarding and educational experience for children. By keeping a dog, kids can learn more about responsibility, caring for others, and respect for living things. Never give any pet as a surprise gift - owning a pet is a big responsibility, and choosing a pet is a personal decision. Don't take on a puppy because you are sorry for it, and never accept a weak or sick one. Never buy a puppy from a street hawker. It is always best to get a puppy direct from a reputable breeder at the place where it was born, but never from a "puppy farm". Always ask to see the mother (and father if possible) as this will indicate the likely temperament, size and appearance of your puppy when it grows up. You should avoid getting your puppy through newspaper advertisements or unscrupulous pet shops and animal traders. |
